La generosità delle persone sex worker è disgustosa?

La storia in breve: una escort decide di aderire ad una delle tante campagne di raccolta giocattoli per i bambini poveri. Come molti esercizi commerciali aderenti all’iniziativa decide di applicare uno sconto (particolarmente generoso tra l’altro: 1 ora gratis per ogni ora di servizio acquistata) a tutti i clienti che le porteranno un giocattolo da donare all’ente benefico.

La notizia rimbalza rapidamente sui media e i commenti sono decisamente disgustosi: la escort viene accusata di opportunismo e di incitare i padri di famiglia a rubare i giocattoli ai propri figli per usufruire di servizi sessuali gratuiti. Il tutto condito da frasi di disgusto e osservazioni più che inopportune.

Ovviamente analoghe osservazioni non sono state riservate agli altri negozi o attività commerciali aderenti (con analoghi e spesso inferiori sconti) all’iniziativa benefica.

Over the weekend, the internet news show The Young Turks drew my attention to this story: a 37-year-old Houston escort who works under the name of Shelby is offering a discount for clients who donate a toy to Toys for Tots. For any guy who booked an hour and brought an unwrapped toy, Shelby offered a second hour for free.

Cenk Ugyur condescendingly calls her “an escort with a golden heart” before launching into his incredibly twisted analysis of the “consequences” of Shelby’s offer: “There’ll be a lot of guys who take their kids’ toys to go get a second hour free with a prostitute. … It seems like she’s doing a good deed, but think of how those guys get their toys.” His sidekick, Ana Kasparian (who rarely offers anything new to Cenk’s analyses), agrees immediately that it’s “disgusting” and makes her “sick to her stomach.”

So what’s the issue here, exactly?  Do Cenk and Ana assume that all businesses who offer a discount in exchange for a Toys for Tots donation are encouraging their customers to steal from their families? New England MINI dealerships for example, or the Duke University Women’s Basketball team, or the USS Midway Museum in San Diego—their patrons must all be equally suspect. Guardare la schiavitù è eccitante?

Questa è la domanda, decisamente provocatoria ma molto affascinante, proposta da Laura Agustin su The Naked Anthropologist.

Una interessante analisi punto per punto della recensione di The Life of a Courtesan scritta da Stephen Holden sul New York Times il 24 Novembre scorso.

Do people want slavery to come back? It would seem that the idea is erotically compelling, granting permission to imagine naked women and children in bondage, in chains, in the thrall of evil captors. With these scenarios, viewers and readers don’t have to think, because Good and Evil are clearly identified with no chance that contradictory uncertainties will muddy one’s reactions. The ferocity with which Kristof is defended is proof that some people will not tolerate any interesting human ambiguity at all (see hostile comments).

But are visions of enslavement also attractive? A new film about an elite brothel in 19th-century France was reviewed in an extraordinarily biased way in the New York Times (whose judgement on slavery issues is now officially in doubt). After sketching what sounds like a dark, subtle, moody movie, the reviewer concludes There is only one word to describe life inside L’Apollonide: slavery.

But the reviewer sounds as though he did not understand the film or its particular artistic vision. Being set mostly inside the brothel itself, any aspect of prostitutes’ lives outside are omitted. The filmmaker has limited the stage to the usual focus in depictions of prostitutes’ lives – the workplace where they perform. The reviewer sounds very naive about women’s lives in general, including today, if he doesn’t know that we get ‘poked at’ by ‘imperious male doctors’ and feel like ‘slabs of meat’. Et cetera. Whatever he chooses to describe about this film, his conclusion that it’s about slavery is just silly.

Le persone sex worker sono state violentate da piccole?

Uno dei miti sulle motivazioni che portano le persone ad intraprendere la professione di sex worker analizzato nei dettagli da Charlotte Shane (di professione sex worker) su Tits and Sass

It’s supposed to be common knowledge that I ended up in my job as an escort because, as a child, I suffered some serious emotional damage. But from the inside looking out, it’s clear to me that non-sex workers have plenty of issues all their own. Last week, one of them kept jumping out at me: civilian women’s cavalier clichés about sex workers’ pasts.

I know plenty of men believe that every sex worker has had a screwed up childhood. For me, though, accusations of familial damage cut a lot deeper when they’re thrown around by women, particularly women with otherwise feminist chops (*coughcough* Tina Fey.) We all suffer from slut/whore/man-hater sexism—meaning we’re all vulnerable to the stigma against a woman expressing sexuality in any “deviant” way—so shouldn’t we all reject that misogyny? It’s obvious that the abused sex worker myth is a symptom of our culture’s need to pathologize sexual women, and it should be obvious why the “some adult must have screwed you up when you were little” jab is a mean-spirited, ignorant, and completely trite accusation—but apparently it isn’t. In occasione della Giornata Internazionale per la fine della violenza contro le persone sex worker a pochi giorni dalle iniziative in UK e in Francia anche a Torino presso il circolo Maurice si svolgerà una serata a tema con proiezioni, testimonianze e discussione.

L’argomento è vasto e complesso ma sento sempre di più l’esigenza di analizzarlo e parlarne insieme, conoscendolo meglio e cercando di capirne tutte le sfaccettature, le implicazioni e le contraddizioni.

X:Meet! – sex workers a Londra

Se siete a Londra martedì 13 dicembre vi segnalo il primo X:Meet (A Sex Worker Social Space) a cura del progetto Xtalk. Un’iniziativa decisamente interessante a cui spero ne seguiranno molte altre!

Xtalk invita tutte e tutti al primo X:Meet!

La prima iniziativa che promuove la creazione di spazi dedicati a tutte le persone che lavorano nell’industria del sesso. Molto spesso ci troviamo in difficoltà nel raccontare le nostre esperienze di lavoro, per questo vogliamo costruire momenti in cui poter condividere, libere/i da ogni stigma, le nostre esperienze di vita e di lavoro. Saranno previste proiezioni di video, discussioni, cibo e musica!

Xtalk – che significa ‘dialogni incrociati – e’ un progetto che nasce nel 2005 in un bordello di Londra, dalla constazione che la conoscenza della lingua era determinante nel lavoro. La strutturale disparità di risorse tra lavoratrici migranti e non, e la realizzazione dell’importanza di comunicare e di lottare assieme, piuttosto che ‘aiutare’ o ‘salvare’, e’ stata la ragione che ci ha condotto a prendere parola tutte e tutti assieme e alla costruzione di percorsi di autodeterminazione. Nella pratica, uno degli obiettivi che ci poniamo è l’organizzazione di lezioni gratuite di inglese per sex worker migranti – con e senza documenti. Proprio attraverso  l’insegnamento della lingua cerchiamo di condividere più  strumenti possibili, utili per avere condizioni di lavoro più sicure e per rompere l’isolamento a cui molte vole siamo costrette/i.

Il nostro progetto è aperto a tutti e tutte coloro che vendono servizi sessuali – lavoratori e lavoratrici nei bordelli, di agenzie escort, nelle case, nei bar, linee telefoniche e internet, stripper, ballerine e porno star. Rispettiamo la scelta delle persone come lavoratrici e lavoratori nell’industria del sesso perche’ troppo spesso viene negata la nostra voce e veniamo considerate/i vittime. Ci viene insegnato a vergorgnarci del nostro lavoro e veniamo invisibilizzati da leggi discriminatorie coperte dall’ipocrita facciata perbenista dello stato che vuole salvarci. In un contesto di vittimizzazione, criminalizzazione e isolamento delle sex worker migranti e di stigmatizzazione delle persone che lavorano nell’industria del sesso, ritieniamo importante la costruzione di spazi di autodeterminazione e di discussione.

Un report dalla Sex Work Open University 2011

Vi segnalo un interessante report dalla Sex Work Open University di Audacia Ray pubblicato su Tits and Sass.

I’ve been a sex worker rights activist for going on a decade now, and I’ve lived in New York all that time. My focus in the early years was very local, meaning that I was concerned with what was happening in my own life and the lives of the people I worked with and cared about. I wanted us to stay safe, get rich, and not deal with douchebag clients – you know, all the dreams a girl could have. When I got involved with $pread magazine and became an editor in 2005, I started to pay more attention to what was happening outside of my little bubble. Being responsible for the news section of the magazine meant that I started to learn more about what was happening in sex worker communities not just across the country, but also across the world.

Over the last few years, I’ve been lucky enough to be able to work more closely with sex worker rights activists globally, and I gotta say that it’s kind of blown my mind. In the fall of 2009 I spent a week in rural India, a few hours south of Mumbai, with SANGRAM and the sex workers at VAMP. We collaborated on a video about sex worker organizing in India, and it gave me immense respect for the work these activists have been doing. In India, there are sex worker unions, and hundreds of sex workers show up at events and rallies. They are loud, and they are a unified community struggling hard for their rights and getting some traction. During one conversation I had with an older woman about the differences in our activism, she said, “In America, you have everything. You have cameras. You use the internet. But you aren’t fighting the government together the way we are. You need to come together and collectivize. It’s the only way.” It really resonated with me. In a place where sex workers have to walk to one well that serves the neighborhood to get water for their huts, their community is infinitely stronger than ours, probably because there’s less obsession with individuality.

Since that fall, I’ve been seeking out other opportunities to learn more about the global situation of sex workers. This past month, I got the opportunity to go to London for Sex Worker Open University, a nearly weeklong event organized by a collective and held in the Arcola Theatre complex in Hackney. There were many sessions every day, an interesting blend of skill shares by and for sex workers, and presentations about policy and activism work. The event ran from Wednesday, October 12 through Sunday, October 16– you can see the full program here and feel envious – and on the Friday, we had an evening of conversation among activists from all over the world. Repressione contro la prostituzione in Francia

In Francia la repressione contro i/le sex worker è in aumento. Oggi  è in corso di discussione all’Assemblée Nationale una risoluzione che tende a riaffermare le posizioni abolizioniste francesi in materia di prostituzione. Alcuni giorni fa lo STRASS – Syndicat du TRAvail Sexuel ha diffuso un comunicato stampa dal titolo C’est nous qui travaillons alors c’est nous qui décidons! (Siamo noi che lavoriamo quindi siamo noi che dobbiamo decidere!):

A una settimana dal voto di questa risoluzione, noi, lavoratori/trici del sesso, femministe e persone coinvolte nella lotta contro l’HIV e le malattie sessualmente trasmissibili vogliamo ricordare, come facciamo senza sosta da molti mesi, che la criminalizzazione dei clienti è un ostacolo ulterioriore sia all’accesso alle strutture di cura, di prevenzione e di monitoraggio, sia all’azione delle associazioni per la salute pubblica e di lotta contro l’HIV e le malattie sessualmente trasmissibili e sarà ulteriormente dannoso anche per le prostitute/i prostituti come è stato l’introduzione del reato di sollecitazione nel 2003.

Annie Sprinkle – Providing Educational Opportunities for Sex Workers

Annie Sprinkle ha pubblicato la sua PhD Dissertation intitolata Providing Educational Opportunities for Sex Workers sul suo sito internet.

In most industries today, workers and their employers take for granted that they will continue to learn more about their career fields. They expect to hone their skills, practice new approaches, and learn about the latest technologies and research advances. However, it is not readily apparent that sex workers have an awareness of continuing education being available for their types of work.

This dissertation researches the existing educational opportunities for sex workers and provides an overview of who offers what. Various organizations, private websites, workshops, videos, health clinics, therapists, conferences and other sources, offer education of various kinds, and for various reasons.

This dissertation then surveys 150 sex workers’ attitudes toward career-related education, their levels of interest, and exactly what they’re interested in learning. Results are tabulated by job description, level of industry experience, and age of the respondents. The overall response was highly favorable toward education. The most popular course topics (out of 28 choices) were, in order, Legal Issues, Career Enhancement, Financial Advice, Super Sex Technologies, Self Defense, and the History of Sex Work. The classes least of interest were, in order, Advanced Safer Sex Techniques, Building Self Esteem, and How to Be A Better Lover.

Next a focus group of sex workers and sex worker educators was assembled. The survey results were shared with this panel of experts who analyzed and discussed them. The group first noticed that the most popular classes were similar to those that would also be of most interest to self-employed individuals in other industries: career-specific skills, and classes in marketing, legal and financial issues. The panel felt that education was very important for the workers, their clientelle and ultimately society at large, and that professional success relies on the same criteria in any business.

They discussed the challenges of educating sex workers, and offered advice for how to best market ‘a sex worker school’ to sex workers, to many of whom the concept would be wholly unfamiliar. Questions regarding legality consituted a huge barrier to teaching some of the topics. Other issues of importance were attitudes such as lack of self esteem of some sex workers, or the feeling that the job was “temporary” so no education was desired. It was determined that it would be beneficial to build support for sex worker empowerment and self esteem into the course design, but not to make it too obvious when marketing the course. The panel also identified the traits of good sex worker educators.

This research resulted in the design of a three day course specifically created to meet the needs of sex workers as identified. Plans are presently being made to implement this comprehensive course for sex workers. The course is called Sex Worker Education and Training, or “The SWEAT”.
