Led by the child who simply knew

Jonas and Wyatt Maines were born identical twins, but from the start each had a distinct personality.

Jonas was all boy. He loved Spiderman, action figures, pirates, and swords.

Wyatt favored pink tutus and beads. At 4, he insisted on a Barbie birthday cake and had a thing for mermaids. On Halloween, Jonas was Buzz Lightyear. Wyatt wanted to be a princess; his mother compromised on a prince costume.

• The Back Story: Reporting about a transgender child

Once, when Wyatt appeared in a sequin shirt and his mother’s heels, his father said: “You don’t want to wear that.’’

“Yes, I do,’’ Wyatt replied.

“Dad, you might as well face it,’’ Wayne recalls Jonas saying. “You have a son and a daughter.’’

That early declaration marked, as much as any one moment could, the beginning of a journey that few have taken, one the Maineses themselves couldn’t have imagined until it was theirs. The process of remaking a family of identical twin boys into a family with one boy and one girl has been heartbreaking and harrowing and, in the end, inspiring — a lesson in the courage of a child, a child who led them, and in the transformational power of love.

Wayne and Kelly Maines have struggled to know whether they are doing the right things for their children, especially for Wyatt, who now goes by the name Nicole. Was he merely expressing a softer side of his personality, or was he really what he kept saying: a girl in a boy’s body? Was he exhibiting early signs that he might be gay? Was it even possible, at such a young age, to determine what exactly was going on?

Until recently, there was little help for children in such situations. But now a groundbreaking clinic at Children’s Hospital in Boston — one of the few of its kind in the world — helps families deal with the issues, both emotional and medical, that arise from having a transgender child — one who doesn’t identify with the gender he or she was born into.

The Children’s Hospital Gender Management Services Clinic can, using hormone therapies, halt puberty in transgender children, blocking the development of secondary sexual characteristics — a beard, say, or breasts — that can make the eventual transition to the other gender more difficult, painful, and costly.

Founded in 2007 by endocrinologist Norman Spack and urologist David Diamond, the clinic — known as GeMS and modeled on a Dutch program — is the first pediatric academic program in the Western Hemisphere that evaluates and treats pubescent transgenders. Persone transessuali e l’asilo politico in Europa

Oggi è il Transgender Day Of Remembrance (Giornata internazionel per le vittime transessuali e transgender – TDoR) e mi è parso importante cercare di capire cosa si muove sul fronte dei diritti delle persone trans.

Il 27 ottobre scorso è stata approvata al Parlamento Europeo una norma che obbliga tutti gli stati membri dell’Unione Europea a concedere asilo politico alle persone transessuali perseguitati nel loro Paese d’origine a causa del cambio di sesso.

Nella norma si legge:

In funzione delle imperanti circostanze nel paese di origine, si può includere nel concetto di gruppo sociale determinato un gruppo basato su una comune caratteristica riguardante l’orientamento sessuale. L’orientamento sessuale non dovrà essere inteso come un crimine nella legislazione nazionale degli stati membri. Ogni aspetto relazionato con il sesso della persona, inclusa l’identità di genere, si terrà debitamente in conto nel determinare l’appartenenza ad un determinato gruppo sociale. La menzione all’identità di genere suppone una novità di fronte alla cornice di leggi già esistente, che non la contemplava espressamente.

Resta ora da vedere come e se la norma verrà recepita dagli stati membri dell’UE e l’effettiva applicazione di tale norma per le persone richiedenti asilo politico.

Giornata Internazionale per le Vittime Transessuali – riflessioni e appuntamenti

Il 20 novembre si celebrerà il Transgender Day of Remembrance (TDoR – Giornata Internazionale per le Vittime Transessuali). In vista di tale ricorrenza (e delle iniziative che si svolgeranno in tutta Italia e che trovate elencate in fondo al comunicato) il Coordinamento Trans Sylvia Rivera ha diffuso alcune interessanti riflessioni sul significato dell’essere Trans, dell’autodeterminazione e sui tentativi di repressione e normazione della società e delle istituzioni nei confronti delle persone T*

Il 20 novembre si celebra il Transgender Day of Remembrance (TDoR), la Giornata Internazionale per le Vittime Transessuali, che ricorda lepersone  transessuali e transgender uccise dalla miscela letale composta dall’odio che arma la mano che le ha colpite e dal pregiudizio che può trasformare certe indagini in fascicoli di serie B, insoluti e archiviati per destino.

Così fu per Rita Hester, assassinata nel 1998, nel cui nome si celebrò a San Francisco il primo Candle Light, il 20 novembre 1999: da allora,questa data è divenuto il simbolo internazionale della lotta contro latransfobia, il pregiudizio contro le persone transessuali e transgender, che può nutrire la violenza assassina, nelle sue punte estreme, così come il disprezzo, la diffidenza, la discriminazione che mortifica la vita delle persone T* nella vita di tutti i giorni.

Le persone transessuali e transgender testimoniano con le loro esistenze, per il solo fatto di essere se stesse/i/*, ciò di cui sempre più ampie parti della  comunità scientifica e della società stanno lentamente prendendo atto: la logica binaria che divide il mondo in maschile e femminile, normale e patologico, sanità e malattia è una gabbia che segrega e insieme rinuncia a comprendere la complessità degli esseri umani.
